Chicken

When it comes to poultry, we source all of our chickens from farms where the birds are reared in smaller flock sizes, by individual farmers who are passionate about the welfare of their animals. We only choose farmers whose chickens have far more space available to them, and also enjoy enriched conditions such as perching on straw bales, and natural periods of daylight and darkness.

Sutton Hoo Chicken Sutton Hoo – Free Range Chicken

In the heart of the Suffolk countryside next to the ancient Anglo Saxon National Trust site at Sutton Hoo is another heritage treasure for you to enjoy. Sutton Hoo Free Range Chickens are chickens with a difference. A Traditional slow growing breed, the birds roam freely on 40 acres of pasture overlooking the River Deben.

The story of Sutton Hoo Chicken began in 1994 when Charles & Belinda Nash set out on a mission to rear truly free range chicken in the Suffolk countryside they both loved. Despite Charles’ passing in 2009, Belinda and Charles’ godson, Will, continues to carry on the couple’s lifelong dream, growing their chickens traditionally, for longer and free range on Suffolk meadows.

The birds live in small groups and shelter from the elements in mobile houses that have no artificial lighting and are naturally ventilated. From about two weeks of age the happy chicks venture outside to enjoy exploring their playground which is the tussocky grassland under Suffolk's vast open skies. From then on all feeding takes place outside by hand with additional nutrients foraged from the surrounding vegetation.

St Geoge's Chicken St George’s – Finest Suffolk Chicken

The St George’s birds are reared in smaller flock sizes by individual farmers who are passionate about the welfare of their animals. The birds not only have far more space available to them than other more intensively reared birds but also enjoy enriched conditions such as perching and being able to rest during natural periods of darkness.

Today consumers are becoming increasingly interested in knowing more about the provenance of their food. Often animal welfare is the key decision making tool but not everybody can afford to purchase Free Range or Organic Free Range produce. Diaper Poultry have recognised this gap in the market by offering the choice of high welfare barn reared St George’s birds as an alternative.
